Botox and FIllers Q&A

What are Botox and fillers?

Botox and fillers are two types of cosmetic injectables:

Botox

Botox and Dysport® both come from botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin that works by relaxing certain muscles. The main treatment areas for Botox include between the brows, the forehead, and the crow’s feet around the eyes. Dysport is FDA-approved for use between the brows.

Botox and Dysport can reduce muscle movement in these areas for as long as three or four months at a time. That, in turn, smooths wrinkles and improves your appearance. Botox and Dysport can help you look younger, rested, and refreshed.

Restylane®

Restylane is a hyaluronic acid filler that gives significant instant volume. It lasts around 6-12 months, depending on the specific formula.

Restylane is ideal for lip plumping and can also treat deep lines (nasolabial or marionette lines) in your face.

Radiesse®

Radiesse is a calcium hydroxyapatite filler that gives some instant volume but also works over time to stimulate new collagen growth.

Radiesse lasts a year or more. It’s best for smile lines, marionette lines, and chin wrinkles.

Sculptra®

Sculptra is a stimulatory poly-L-lactic acid filler. It doesn't change your facial volume immediately but instead goes to work, triggering your body to build a new collagen matrix under the skin. It treats smile lines, marionette lines, sunken cheeks, and chin wrinkles.

Over time, this leads to skin lifting and tightening while reducing wrinkles and lines. Sculptra can last for a couple of years or more.

The Dorset Street Dermatology team can discuss your treatment goals to help you choose the right options.

Can you combine Botox and fillers?

You can have Botox and filler treatment at the same time if you wish. In general, Botox is a good solution for upper face lines and wrinkles, specifically those related to muscle movement. Fillers are a good choice for middle and lower face sagging, lines, and volume concerns.

How can I extend the results of Botox and fillers?

Maintaining healthy skin is the best way to maximize the results of your injectables. Dorset Street Dermatology can help you do this in a variety of ways, including medical-grade skin care products from Skinceuticals® and Obagi®. An Anti-Aging Facial is another way to stimulate collagen production, promote hydration, and firm the skin.
